Issues of faith and family are sources of great passion among many evangelical Christians. This passion has been further fueled because of the successful efforts of the secularists in removing America’s Christian heritage from all levels of public life. For example, the U.S. Supreme Court removed public prayer from public schools in 1962. Public Bible reading was forbidden in 1963. The 10 Commandments came off the school house walls in 1980.
The resulting cultural shift away from Judeo-Christian values has been dramatic and damaging. The evidence of for this shift is not only found in the radical secularization of public schools and government institutions, but also in the raw degradation of television and media. Think about it. In less than 40 years, we've gone from "Leave it to Beaver" to "Beavis and Butthead." At the same time, we've seen a redefinition and rapid deterioration of the family. In fact, 2000 U.S. Census figures show that the traditional family is in a statistical free-fall. Here are some of the most disturbing findings:
- For the first time ever, nuclear families dropped below 25% of all households.
- From other studies, we know that cohabitation increased by close to 1,000% from 1960 to 1998.
- Households headed by unmarried partners grew by 72% during the last decade alone.
- A third of all babies were born to unmarried women, (33%) compared to only 3.8% in 1940.
- The number of same-sex homes is skyrocketing, over 400% since 1990.
Consequently, experts believe that we are literally moving toward a post-Christian and post-family society. Dr. Richard Land, President of The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the SBC and host of the nationally syndicated radio program For Faith & Family comments: “Christian families are under attack today like in no other generation… Parents should be concerned with the America that their children will inhabit in the future.”
The stage is set for the battle for faith and family in America—a battle we must win at all costs. That's where you and I come in. We need to take our place on the battlefield. The Joshua Team (Issues Concern and Cultural Impact group) is here to equip you to win the battle in your church and community. Please let us know how we can help.
